Myanmar earthquake LIVE: China issues tsunami warning | World | News
Myanmar has been hit by a massive earthquake on Friday, with huge tremors felt in cities across South East Asia.
The earthquake was measured at magnitude 7.7 initially before being upgraded to 8.2, with the epicentre being the city of Mandalay. Fears of a tsunami have since erupted, with the Tsunami Warning Centre of China’s Ministry of Natural Resources assessing local tsunamis may occur – although China would not be impacted by them. Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw airports have both been closed after an air traffic control tower also collapsed during the quake.
While the tremor originated in Myanmar, where authorities fear thousands may have been killed, it deeply affected also neighbouring countries, including Thailand and Vietnam.
In Vietnam’s Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, lights were swaying from the shaking. In Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, a skyscraper and other buildings collapsed, killing at least two people and trapping around 50 workers under the debris. In another video shared online, water is seen pouring down from the rooftop swimming pool of another 30-storey tower block and into the street below.
Hundreds were seen running outside of their homes and buildings after the earthquake in devastating scenes of panic.
