UPDATE 4: The Game Awards drew to an end with a reveal for an Okami sequel, which is directed by Hideki Kamiya.

Kamiya directed the original game, before helping to form PlatinumGames.

Fans were also treated to the reveal of Naughty Dog’s new game titled Intergalactic The Heretic Prophet, which has been in development since 2020 and is directed by Neil Druckmann. You can take a look at the stunning looking game below.

The new trailer was followed by the Game of the Year award, which was given to PS5 exclusive Astro Bot.

UPDATE 3: Naughty Dog made an announcement at The Game Awards, although sadly it wasn’t quite what fans were hoping for.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered has been announced for PC on April 3, 2025. Needless to say, it will come with a host of improvements and customisation options.

Elsewhere, Double Dragon Revive has been given an October 2025 release date, while the makers of Overcooked unveiled a new game called Stage Fright, which is published by Hello Games.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds was announced with a very short trailer, followed by the first look at Mafia: The Old Country, which will launch next summer. To celebrate the release of the new Mafia trailer, it was announced that the original trilogy is heavily discounted on Steam.

UPDATE 2: Borderlands 4 was given a spectacular gameplay trailer, alongside Steel Hunters from Wargaming.

Interestingly, GTA 6 predictably won Most Anticipated Game, but nobody from Rockstar Games made a speech. Considering some of the high-profile announcements we’ve had in the early stages, perhaps GTA 6 will make an appearance at the awards.

Capcom announced Onimusha Way of the Sword, which has been given a 2026 release date.

Another old-school game franchise making a comeback is Turok, as Turok Origins is given a debut trailer.

Likewise, Yakuza studio Ryu Ga Gotaku is working on a new Virtua Fighter game, alongside a brutal action game titled Project Century. The latter looks a bit like the Yakuza games, only much more violent.

Confirming earlier reports, The First Berserker is out on March 27, Palworld’s next update titled Feybreak is scheduled to launch on December 23.

Interestingly given Snoop Dogg was presenting the award, but Helldivers 2 won Best Ongoing Game. I assumed Fortnite would win.

A new Game of Thrones title was also announced during the event. Launching in 2025, Kingsroad appears to be a new mobile game developed by Netmarble.

UPDATE: The Game Awards 2024 is certainly living up to the hype, beginning with a trailer for the new Witcher game starring Ciri. Sadly, however, it was just a cinematic trailer.

FromSoftware recently said that Elden Ring wouldn’t be getting a sequel, but it didn’t mention anything about a spinoff. Launching in 2025, Elden Ring Nightreign is a co-op action game for up to three players. Judging by the trailer, it features enemies from other FromSoftware games, including The Nameless King from Dark Souls 3. The game also has roguelike elements, as players create different builds in an attempt to survive a number of days in Limgrave, with a different boss battle and end location at its conclusion.

Ice and Shadow of the Colossus creator Fumito Ueda unveiled an untitled new game, which appears to revolves around a boy and a mech. It’s also been announced for Xbox.

The Outer Worlds 2 is announced for 2025 on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. It will come to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on day one.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is coming to PC with a number of improvements on January 23.

Elsewhere, Josef Fares confirmed that co-op adventure game Split Fiction will launch on March 6. Similar to It Takes Two, fans can play with a friend using a Friend Pass. It takes place between fantasy and science-fiction worlds.

On the face of it, The Game Awards is about recognising the best video games, studios and performers from the past year.

Of course, what gaming fans really care about are the new game announcements, trailers and surprise reveals that have become a staple of the annual event.

For UK viewers, The Game Awards 2024 will be broadcast from 12.30am until around 4am GMT on December 13. That’s 4.30pm PT US time.

In terms of what fans can expect, The Game Awards 2024 will feature a new trailer for Mafia: The Old Country.

The news was confirmed on X (formerly Twitter): “Mafia The Old Country has been confirmed for a full world premiere reveal on Thursday during The Game Awards.”

Borderlands 4 will also make an appearance at The Game Awards, although whether it’s gameplay or cinematics is yet to be seen.

“Prepare yourselves! We’re about to crank things up to the next f*****g level at The Game Awards,” reads a Borderlands tweet.

“Who’s ready to get their first look at the most ambitious Borderlands yet?!”

Likewise, It Takes Two and Brothers A Tale of Two Sons director Josef Fares has told fans that his studio’s new game Split Fiction will be shown at the event.

Hideo Kojima will make an appearance, while The First Berserker: Khazan, Tekken 8 DLC and Dune Awakening are also expected to be shown.

Of course, the real fun is trying to guess the surprise reveals. Speaking on the Kinda Funny Games videocast, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier told viewers to expect at least two really big announcements.

“What can I say without getting in trouble…” Schreier said. “So I know about a couple of announcements that’ll be there, and they would qualify as big announcements.

“That said, like, big announcements are games that won’t be out for years. I think there’s a good chance that you’ll see one or two teaser trailers for a game that is like 2026 or even later in many cases.”

According to Schreier, viewers will be shocked by at least two of the announcements.

One of the big rumours is that Resident Evil 9 will be announced during the event. Considering Resident Evil Village launched back in 2021, the timeline would certainly make sense.

FromSoftware recently confirmed that it is working on various new titles covering multiple genres. Perhaps one of these games will make an appearance during The Game Awards?

Then there’s the Nintendo Switch 2, which is tipped to launch in 2025. It’s more likely Nintendo will unveil it during a Direct event, but stranger things have happened. Perhaps we’ll get an Xbox Series X mid-generation upgrade instead.

And finally, there’s GTA 6. With the first Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer making its debut just over a year ago, some fans think we may see GTA 6 Trailer 2 at The Game Awards.

However, this seems unlikely given Mafia The Old Country has already been announced for The Game Awards. Mafia publisher 2K and GTA 6 developer Rockstar Games are both subsidiaries of Take-Two Interactive, which makes it unlikely both games will make an appearance during the event.
