This pretty European city is one of the world’s smallest – so small that most people haven’t even heard of it.

Hum, in Istria, Croatia, is a tiny city situated nearly nine miles from Buzet, west of the mountain of Učka.

It only has 30 inhabitants and two streets – but the city shows that good things can come in small packages. It is a hub of great architecture, rich culture and interesting history.

The city of Hum was formed in the 11th century when the first houses were built. Today, the main style of the city is one that was formed in the 19th century when the church was built.

Hum is a fascinating place to visit if you’re looking for somewhere off the radar. 

While it won’t take you long to see it, there is a great selection of restaurants and churches to explore – you can also take a look at its castle and city gate.

What makes Hum so interesting to travellers today is that it is a unique example of a city which was developed entirely within the confines of its medieval walls which is very rare.

“It’s tiny (of course) but has a unique charm, as you enter through the imposing gated entrance you feel like you are being transported back in time. It doesn’t feel like much has changed here for centuries.

“The road up is an interesting one and you just need to keep reminding yourself it’s going to be worth it as you drive up. The back route we took was a bit hair-raising in parts!”

To get there, the closest airport is Rijeka which is less than an hour away from Hum by car.

Many travellers taking a trip to the area may also stop off at Zagreb which is 123 miles away from Hum.
